Lumber Calculator – User Guide

Introduction

The Lumber Calculator helps you estimate the amount of lumber needed for your construction project. By inputting your project dimensions and lumber specifications, you can calculate the total number of pieces required, the total board feet, and optionally, the estimated cost based on price per board foot.

Understanding the Calculations

Number of Pieces Needed

The calculator estimates the number of lumber pieces required by dividing the project dimensions by the lumber dimensions.

Pieces Needed Length-wise = Ceiling(Project Length / Lumber Length)
Pieces Needed Width-wise = Ceiling(Project Width / (Lumber Width / 12))
Pieces Needed Height-wise = Ceiling(Project Height / (Lumber Thickness / 12))

Total Pieces Needed:

Total Pieces = Pieces Needed Length-wise × Pieces Needed Width-wise × Pieces Needed Height-wise

Total Board Feet Calculation

Board feet is a unit of measurement for lumber in the U.S. and Canada.

Board Feet per Piece = (Thickness (in) × Width (in) × Length (ft)) / 12
Total Board Feet = Board Feet per Piece × Total Pieces

Estimating Total Cost

If you provide the price per board foot, the calculator will estimate the total cost.

Total Cost = Total Board Feet × Price per Board Foot

How to Use the Calculator

  1. Open the calculator in your web browser.
  2. Enter your project’s dimensions:
    • Length (in feet)
    • Width (in feet)
    • Height (in feet)
  3. Enter the lumber specifications:
    • Thickness (in inches)
    • Width (in inches)
    • Length (in feet)
  4. Optionally, enter the Price per Board Foot to estimate the total cost.
  5. Click the Calculate button.
  6. The calculator will display:
    • The number of pieces needed.
    • The total board feet required.
    • The estimated total cost (if price per board foot is provided).

Important Notes

  • All dimensions must be positive numbers.
  • Ensure you use consistent units (feet for lengths, inches for thickness and width).
  • The calculations are estimates; consider purchasing extra lumber to account for waste or errors.
  • The calculator assumes straightforward projects; complex designs may require more detailed calculations.

Note: Always consult with a professional for precise material requirements.

Example Calculation

Suppose you are building a deck that is:

  • Length: 20 feet
  • Width: 15 feet
  • Height: 0.5 feet (6 inches above ground)

You plan to use lumber that is:

  • Thickness: 2 inches
  • Width: 6 inches
  • Length: 10 feet

The price per board foot is $2.50.

Calculations:

Pieces Needed Length-wise:

Pieces Length-wise = Ceiling(20 ft / 10 ft) = 2

Pieces Needed Width-wise:

Pieces Width-wise = Ceiling(15 ft / (6 in / 12)) = Ceiling(15 ft / 0.5 ft) = 30

Pieces Needed Height-wise:

Pieces Height-wise = Ceiling(0.5 ft / (2 in / 12)) = Ceiling(0.5 ft / 0.1667 ft) ≈ 3

Total Pieces Needed:

Total Pieces = 2 × 30 × 3 = 180

Board Feet per Piece:

Board Feet per Piece = (2 in × 6 in × 10 ft) / 12 = 10 bf

Total Board Feet:

Total Board Feet = 10 bf × 180 = 1800 bf

Total Cost:

Total Cost = 1800 bf × $2.50/bf = $4500.00
