Understanding Body Mass Index (BMI)

Body Mass Index (BMI) is a calculation used to estimate body fat percentage based on weight and height. It is calculated using the formula:

BMI = Weight (kg) / Height (m)²

For example, if a person weighs 70 kg and is 1.7 m tall, their BMI would be:

BMI = 70 / (1.7)² = 24.2

BMI is categorized as follows:

Underweight: less than 18.5, Normal weight: 18.5-24.9, Overweight: 25-29.9, and Obese: 30 or more.

Normal BMI Range

A normal BMI for adults is between 18.5 and 24.9. BMI is a calculation that estimates body fat percentage based on a person’s weight and height.

BMI categories

  • Underweight: Less than 18.5
  • Normal weight: 18.5–24.9
  • Overweight: 25.0–29.9
  • Obesity: 30.0 or greater

BMI and health

  • A BMI below 18.5 may indicate an increased risk of malnutrition, anemia, and osteoporosis.
  • A BMI of 25 or higher may indicate an increased risk of type 2 diabetes.
  • For people who are 65 or older, the “normal” BMI range may extend into the “overweight” range.

BMI considerations

  • BMI is a screening tool, not a diagnosis.
  • BMI doesn’t account for all the ways people’s bodies may differ.
  • People from South Asian, Chinese, African-Caribbean, and black African backgrounds may be at higher risk of health problems at a lower BMI.

You can use Our BMI calculator to estimate your body fat percentage. You can also talk with your doctor about your BMI.

It’s important to note that BMI is not a perfect measure of body fat and may not be accurate for certain groups of people, such as athletes or pregnant women.
