Ferranti Effect Voltage Calculator

Ferranti Effect Voltage Calculator

Calculate the receiving-end voltage due to the Ferranti effect using:
\( V_R = V_S \sec(\beta L) \) and \( \Delta V = V_R – V_S \)
where \( \beta = 2\pi f \sqrt{L’ C’} \) (with \(L’\) in mH/km and \(C’\) in µF/km) and \(L\) is in km.

* Enter sending voltage (kV), frequency (Hz), line length (km), and line parameters.

Step 1: Enter Line Parameters

Example: 220 kV

Example: 60 Hz

Example: 200 km

Example: 1 mH/km

Example: 10 µF/km

Derived Formulas:
\( \beta = 2\pi f \sqrt{L’ C’} \) (with \(L’\) in mH/km converted to H/km and \(C’\) in µF/km converted to F/km),
\( V_R = V_S \sec(\beta L) \) and \( \Delta V = V_R – V_S \).

Example:
For \(V_S=220\,\text{kV}\), \(f=60\,\text{Hz}\), \(L=200\,\text{km}\), \(L’=1\,\text{mH/km}\), and \(C’=10\,\mu\text{F/km}\), the calculator computes the corresponding receiving‑end voltage and voltage rise.
