Compost Calculator Guide

Use this compost calculator to estimate cubic yards and bag count for amending garden beds. Enter bed length, width, compost depth in inches, and optional bag size to plan bulk delivery or retail purchases.

How to use the compost calculator

Enter bed length and width in feet, the depth of compost you plan to incorporate in inches, and optionally your bag size in cubic feet.

Results show total volume in cubic yards and approximate bag count when bag size is provided.

Compost volume formula

Volume (cu ft) = Length (ft) × Width (ft) × Depth (in) ÷ 12. Cubic yards = Cubic feet ÷ 27. Bags needed = Cubic feet ÷ Bag size (round up).

  • Cu ft = L × W × (depth in / 12)
  • Cubic yards = cu ft / 27
  • Typical amendment depth: 1–3 inches incorporated into topsoil
  • Common bag sizes: 1.0, 1.5, or 2.0 cu ft

Worked example

A 10 ft × 4 ft bed amended with 2 inches of compost: Area = 40 sq ft. Volume = 40 × (2 ÷ 12) = 6.67 cubic feet.

Cubic yards = 6.67 ÷ 27 ≈ 0.25 yards. With 1.5 cu ft bags, you need about 5 bags (6.67 ÷ 1.5 rounded up).

How much compost to add

New beds and annual renovation often incorporate 2–4 inches of compost into the top 6–8 inches of soil. Maintenance top-dressing may use 0.5–1 inch per season.

Finished, screened compost is best — avoid hot or unfinished material that can tie up nitrogen.

Application tips

Spread compost evenly and work into the soil before planting. Pair with a soil test to avoid over-applying phosphorus when compost is applied year after year.

  • Bulk compost by the cubic yard is economical for large beds.
  • See our soil amendment calculator for percentage-based mixing.
  • Combine with raised bed soil compost ratio for new bed fills.
  • Store bagged compost dry until use to prevent anaerobic breakdown.
