Estimate Bricks and Mortar

How It Works

This calculator determines the wall's surface area, then divides it by the area of a single brick plus its mortar joint to find the number of bricks. A waste percentage is added for cuts and breakage. Mortar volume is estimated by subtracting the volume of the bricks from the total wall volume.

Brick Wall Calculator Guide

Understanding Brick Calculations

Calculating bricks isn't just about the area of the wall; it's about the size of the brick, the thickness of the mortar joint, and the type of wall (single vs. double skin). A precise calculation ensures you order enough bricks from the same batch to avoid color mismatches.

The Core Variables
  • Wall Area: Length × Height of the wall.
  • Brick Size: Standard US modular bricks are typically 7 5/8" × 3 5/8" × 2 1/4".
  • Mortar Joint: Usually 3/8" or 1/2". This space adds up significantly over a large wall!

Bricks per Sq Ft ≈ 7 (for standard modular bricks with 3/8" mortar)
Total Bricks = Wall Area (sq ft) × Bricks per Sq Ft × (1 + Waste %)

Don't Forget the Mortar!

Mortar Calculation Rule of Thumb

For standard modular bricks with 3/8" joints:

  • 1,000 Bricks require approx. 1 Cubic Yard of sand.
  • 1 Bag of Cement (Type N) lays approx. 40-50 bricks.

Waste Factors

Bricks break during transit and cutting. Mortar falls off the trowel.

  • Bricks: Add 5-10% for breakage and cuts.
  • Mortar: Add 10-20% for waste (it's messy!).
