Brick wall quantity and material estimating guide

Brick quantity depends on net wall area and the nominal face module formed by the actual brick plus its intended mortar joints. Manufacturer names are not enough because the same brick name can represent different dimensions.

The calculator estimates full-unit equivalents. Bond patterns, corners, returns, piers, sills and decorative courses can change the mix of full, cut and special units required.

How to estimate bricks for a wall

  1. Measure all walls: Enter wall length, height and the count of identical wall sections.
  2. Deduct openings: Add the areas of doors and windows across the entered walls.
  3. Choose wall thickness: Select the number of brick wythes shown in the project documents.
  4. Verify the brick module: Enter manufacturer actual dimensions and the intended bed and head joint size.
  5. Plan the order: Review brick count, pallets, waste and cost, then confirm packaging and availability with the supplier.

Formula and variables

Net area subtracts entered openings from all walls. The face module is brick length plus head joint multiplied by brick height plus bed joint.

Worked example: 20 ft by 8 ft modular-brick wall

One wall has no openings and uses one wythe of 7⅝ in × 2¼ in modular brick with ⅜ in joints and 7% waste.

A geometric estimate of the space between nominal masonry volume and brick units. Use supplier yield data for purchasing mortar.

  • Structural capacity, support, anchorage and code compliance are outside the calculation.

Should window and door openings be deducted?

Yes for a basic material takeoff, while still allowing for returns, sills, lintel details, cuts and project-specific waste.

What does one wythe mean?

A wythe is one continuous vertical thickness of masonry units. Brick veneer is commonly one wythe, while other wall assemblies may use more.

How much extra brick should I order?

Use a project-specific allowance for cuts, breakage, selection, bond and future repairs. The calculator permits 0% to 30% but does not prescribe one value.
