Understanding Concrete Calculations
Concrete is sold by volume, typically in cubic yards (for truck deliveries) or cubic feet (for pre-mixed bags). Calculating the exact amount needed is crucial because ordering too little stops the job cold, while ordering too much wastes money and creates disposal headaches.
The Basic Formula
The core formula for concrete volume is simple geometry: Length × Width × Depth.
However, the challenge lies in unit conversion. Most projects are measured in feet and inches, but concrete is sold by the cubic yard.
Volume (cu. ft.) = Length (ft) × Width (ft) × Depth (ft)
Volume (cu. yds.) = Volume (cu. ft.) / 27
Why divide by 27? Because a cubic yard is 3 feet wide, 3 feet long, and 3 feet deep (3 × 3 × 3 = 27 cubic feet).

Crucial Tips for Success
The 10% Waste Rule
Always add 5-10% to your calculated volume. This accounts for spillage, uneven subgrades (ground that isn't perfectly flat), and the fact that concrete settles. It's much cheaper to buy an extra bag than to drive back to the store mid-pour.
Prepare Your Subgrade
Concrete is only as strong as the ground beneath it. Ensure your soil is compacted and add a 4-inch layer of gravel (compacted) before pouring. This prevents cracking due to soil movement.
