Concrete is purchased by delivered volume or by bags with a stated yield. Accurate ordering begins with finished form dimensions, followed by a project allowance and the supplier’s ordering rules.
This calculator estimates quantity only. Thickness, strength, reinforcement, exposure requirements, joints and mixture proportions must come from the project design or applicable requirements.
How to calculate concrete quantity
- Choose the shape: Select slab, footing or round column and enter finished inside dimensions.
- Enter quantity: Use identical sections for repeated pads, piers or columns.
- Set an allowance: Choose a project-specific volume allowance after checking grade and form tolerances.
- Choose purchase method: Use ready-mix for delivered volume or bags with manufacturer-stated yield.
- Confirm supplier rules: Verify minimum order, rounding increment, load capacity, fees and delivery access.
Formula and variables
Rectangular work uses length × width × depth. Round columns use π × radius² × height. Identical sections multiply the geometric volume.

Worked example: 12 ft by 10 ft slab, 4 in thick
One rectangular slab uses 5% allowance and a 0.25 yd³ supplier increment.

- Convert 4 inches to one-third foot.
- Calculate 40 ft³, or about 1.48 yd³.

Result: The ready-mix order estimate is 1.75 yd³.
Confirm supplier minimums and short-load charges; the rounded order includes more than the geometric volume.

Limitations
- Irregular profiles, slopes and variable grade are not modeled.
- Pump priming, testing, returned concrete and field loss are not separately calculated.
- The result does not specify concrete performance or structural details.

- Mixing inches and feet or centimeters and meters.
- Using excavation size instead of finished form dimensions.
- Assuming every bag size has the same yield.
- Ordering exact geometry without considering field conditions.
- Ignoring minimum loads, short-load fees and access limits.
