Concrete Column Volume Calculator Guide
Calculating Column Volume
Columns are vertical structural elements. They can be square, rectangular, or circular (Sonotubes).
The Formulas
Square/Rectangular: Length × Width × Height
Circular: π × Radius² × Height
Remember: Radius is half of the Diameter.
Pouring Columns
Hydrostatic Pressure
Wet concrete pushes OUTWARDS hard.
- Blowouts: Tall columns create immense pressure at the bottom. Ensure forms are heavily braced at the base.
- Pour Rate: Don't pour too fast. Let the bottom set slightly to reduce pressure.
Sonotubes
Cardboard forms for round columns.
- Bracing: They are flimsy until filled. Brace them vertically so they don't lean.
- Vibration: Vibrate carefully to avoid tearing the cardboard.
