How to calculate concrete for columns and piers

  1. Choose the cross-section: Select round or rectangular and enter finished outside dimensions.
  2. Enter height and quantity: Use identical columns only; calculate differing sizes separately.
  3. Model a true void if required: Deduct only a documented full-height hollow core, not ordinary reinforcement.
  4. Set the allowance: Add a project-specific contingency for forms, placement and measured conditions.
  5. Confirm purchasing assumptions: Use actual bag yield, ready-mix pricing and truck capacity.

Formula and variables

Round areas use πr²; rectangular areas use width times depth. Ordering allowance is applied after any full-height void is deducted.

Worked example: four 12-inch round piers

Four solid piers are 12 in in diameter and 8 ft high with 5% allowance.

  2. Multiply by four and convert to cubic yards.
  3. Add 5% allowance.

Result: Net volume is about 0.931 yd³ and order volume is about 0.977 yd³.

Assumptions

  • The optional void extends the full column height.

Limitations

  • Tapered, flared, belled or stepped columns are not modeled.
  • Reinforcement displacement is not deducted.
  • Form ties, chamfers, joints, caps and bases are excluded.
  • Structural and temporary-works design are outside scope.

Common mistakes

  • Using diameter as radius.

Usually not for a basic order estimate. Deduct only when project estimating procedures explicitly require it.

What does form contact area include?

It includes modeled vertical outer surfaces and, when selected, the full-height inner void surface.

Can this calculate tapered columns?
