Asphalt Properties

How It Works

This calculator finds the total volume of the area to be paved. It then uses the provided density (average asphalt density is ~145 lbs/ft³ or 2322 kg/m³) to convert that volume into weight. If a price is given, it calculates the total material cost.

Understanding Asphalt Calculations

Asphalt (or "blacktop") is sold by weight (tons), not just volume. Because it is a dense mixture of stone, sand, and bitumen, calculating the exact tonnage requires knowing the density of the specific mix you are using.

The Formula

Volume (cu. ft.) = Length (ft) × Width (ft) × Depth (ft)
Weight (lbs) = Volume × Density (lbs/cu. ft.)
Tons Needed = Weight (lbs) / 2,000

Standard hot-mix asphalt typically weighs about 145-150 lbs per cubic foot.

Hot Mix vs. Cold Patch

Hot Mix Asphalt

Delivered hot (300°F+) by truck. Must be installed and compacted immediately.

  • Best for: Driveways, parking lots, roads
  • Durable and long-lasting
  • Requires professional equipment

Cold Patch

Sold in bags. Remains soft until compacted.

  • Best for: Pothole repairs, small cracks
  • DIY friendly
  • Not for large areas
