Asphalt quantity and tonnage calculator guide
Asphalt is normally ordered by weight, while a driveway or parking area is measured by area and compacted thickness. This calculator converts the finished pavement geometry into compacted volume and then applies the selected mix density.
Density is project-specific. Aggregate type, mixture design, air voids and compaction affect unit weight, so a supplier or approved mix-design value is more reliable than a generic default.
How to estimate asphalt for a paving project
- Choose units and shape: Select imperial or metric units and the closest plan shape.
- Enter finished dimensions: Measure the paving boundary and enter the intended compacted depth.
- Confirm density: Replace the default with the supplier or mix-design density when available.
- Add an ordering allowance: Account for irregular edges, grade variation, handling and minimum-order constraints.
- Review delivery assumptions: Enter payload and price to estimate trips and material-only cost.
Formula and variables
Rectangular area is length times width; circular area is π times radius squared. Consistent units are used before volume is multiplied by compacted density.
Order weight = area × compacted depth × density × (1 + allowance %)- Area — Paved surface

Worked example: 50 ft by 20 ft driveway
A rectangular driveway is 50 ft long, 20 ft wide and 3 in deep, using 147 lb/ft³ compacted density and 5% allowance.

- Dimensions describe a level plan area.
- Depth is the final compacted thickness.
- Density is uniform through the paved volume.
- The allowance is applied to volume and weight.
Limitations
- Irregular slopes, crowns, transitions and variable depth are not modeled.
- The calculator does not design pavement structure or determine required lift thickness.
- Truckloads are mathematical equivalents rather than a delivery schedule.

Required structure depends on subgrade, drainage, traffic, climate and agency or project requirements. A quantity calculator cannot select a safe section.

How many tons of asphalt do I need?
Multiply paved area by compacted depth and compacted mix density, convert the result to tons, and add an appropriate ordering allowance.
What asphalt density should I use?
Use the supplier or approved mix-design density. The 147 lb/ft³ default is an FHWA example for one limestone-aggregate mixture, not a universal value.
Does the calculator include waste?
Yes. The ordering allowance is applied after the compacted base quantity is calculated.
Is a short ton the same as a metric tonne?
No. A US short ton is 2,000 lb, while a metric tonne is 1,000 kg.
Does this tell me how thick the asphalt should be?
No. Thickness and pavement structure require project-specific design based on traffic, support, drainage, materials and applicable specifications.
