Gravel Calculator Guide
Understanding Gravel Calculations
Gravel is one of the most commonly used aggregates in construction and landscaping. It's sold by volume (cubic yards) or weight (tons), and understanding the conversion between these units is key to ordering the right amount.
Weight vs. Volume
Gravel density varies by type, but typically ranges from 2,400 to 2,900 lbs per cubic yard. This means one cubic yard of gravel weighs approximately 1.2 to 1.5 tons.
1 Cubic Yard ≈ 1.2 to 1.5 Tons
1 Ton ≈ 0.7 to 0.8 Cubic Yards
Choosing the Right Gravel
Crushed Stone
Angular, machine-crushed rock with rough edges.
- Best for: Driveways, road base, drainage, foundations
- Sizes: #57 (3/4"), #67 (3/4" - fines), #2 (3")
Pea Gravel
Small, naturally rounded stones about 3/8" in diameter.
- Best for: Walkways, patios, playgrounds, decorative landscaping
- Note: Does not compact well, may shift underfoot
