Concrete Beam Volume Calculator Guide
Calculating Beam Volume
A concrete beam is a horizontal structural element that carries loads. Calculating its volume is straightforward geometry, but accuracy is critical for ordering the right amount of concrete.
The Formula
Volume = Length × Width × Depth
Ensure all units are the same (e.g., all in meters or all in feet) before multiplying.
What to Watch For
Reinforcement
Beams are heavily reinforced with rebar.
- Displacement: Rebar takes up space (volume), but for general ordering, we usually ignore this displacement as a safety margin.
- Cover: Ensure you account for the "concrete cover" (distance from outer edge to rebar) in your structural design, not just volume.
Waste Factor
You will always spill some.
- Standard: Add 5-10% for spillage, over-excavation, or formwork deflection (bowing out).
- Pump: If using a pump truck, add extra for the concrete left in the hopper/hose.
