Concrete slab volume and ordering guide
A slab takeoff starts with finished plan area and uniform thickness, but openings and thickened edges can materially change the order. Supplier increments and field conditions also affect the practical purchase quantity.
This calculator estimates quantity and surface area only. Slab thickness, reinforcement, joints, subgrade, drainage and concrete properties require project-specific design.
How to calculate concrete for a slab
- Measure inside the forms: Enter finished length, width and uniform main slab thickness.
- Deduct true openings: Enter combined areas that receive no slab concrete.
- Add perimeter thickening: If detailed, enter the thickened edge width and total depth.
- Apply an allowance: Use a project-specific amount after checking forms and grade.
- Confirm supplier details: Verify order increment, minimums, bag yield and prices before purchasing.
Formula and variables
The thickened-edge term adds only the depth below the main slab so the shared slab thickness is not counted twice.
Total volume = net slab area × thickness + perimeter × edge width × added edge depth- Net area — Gross area less openings
- Top plan area that will receive concrete.
- Added edge depth — Edge depth below slab
- Total thickened-edge depth minus the main slab thickness.
- Order increment — Supplier rounding unit
- Purchasing increment used to round the allowance-adjusted volume upward.
Worked example: 20 ft by 24 ft slab
A 4 in slab has no openings or thickened edge and uses 5% allowance with 0.25 yd³ ordering increments.

- Calculate 480 × 4/12 = 160 ft³.
- Convert to about 5.93 yd³.
- Add 5% and round upward to 0.25 yd³.
Result: The ready-mix order estimate is 6.25 yd³.
Remeasure grade and forms before ordering; actual field conditions can require a different allowance.

Ready-mix order
Base and thickened-edge volume after allowance and supplier rounding.
Finish area
Net top surface area after opening deductions; it is not a labor productivity estimate.
Bag equivalent
Order volume divided by entered product yield and rounded up to whole bags.
Assumptions
- Slabs are rectangular and identical.
- Main thickness is uniform.
- The thickened edge is continuous and rectangular.
- Openings extend through the main slab.
Limitations
- Turn-downs, interior beams, slopes and depressions are not separately modeled.
- The perimeter feature does not resolve overlapping corner geometry in detailed takeoffs.
- Reinforcement, joints, finishes and formwork components are excluded.
Common mistakes
- Counting total edge depth in addition to slab thickness.
- Using excavation dimensions instead of finished form dimensions.
- Forgetting openings or interior thickened beams.
- Mixing inches with feet.
- Ordering from plan dimensions without checking grade.

How do I calculate slab concrete?
Multiply finished length by width by thickness using consistent units, subtract through-openings, add any detailed thickened sections, then apply the allowance.
How is a thickened edge calculated?
The calculator multiplies perimeter by edge width and only the edge depth below the main slab.
Should I subtract floor drains or small penetrations?
Only deduct openings when the project takeoff procedure considers them material; small items are often covered by the ordering allowance.
Does finish area include openings?
No. It reports gross plan area less the entered openings.
Can this design slab thickness?
No. Thickness and reinforcement require project-specific design and applicable requirements.
