Concrete Steps Calculator Guide
Understanding Step Calculations
Building concrete steps is a geometry puzzle. You need to calculate the volume of concrete for the steps themselves, plus the landing, and often a foundation or footing underneath to prevent sinking.
Rise and Run
The two most important terms in stair building are:
Rise: The vertical height of each step (typically 7-8 inches).
Run: The horizontal depth of each step (typically 10-11 inches).
A comfortable stair follows the rule: 2 × Rise + Run ≈ 25-27 inches.
Calculating Volume
The Block Method
Imagine each step as a rectangular block stacked on top of the one below it.
- Calculate volume of bottom step (widest).
- Calculate volume of 2nd step.
- Add them all up.
Don't Forget the Fill
You don't always pour solid concrete.
- Rubble Fill: Builders often put clean stone or broken concrete in the center to save money.
- Rebar: Essential for tying steps to the foundation.
