Mulch Calculator Guide
Understanding Mulch Calculations
Mulch is sold by volume, typically in cubic yards (bulk) or cubic feet (bags). It's one of the easiest ways to improve your garden's appearance and health, retaining moisture and suppressing weeds.
The 3-Inch Rule
For most landscape beds, a depth of 3 inches is ideal. Less than 2 inches won't stop weeds; more than 4 inches can suffocate plant roots.
1 Cubic Yard = 27 Cubic Feet
Coverage at 3" depth ≈ 100 Square Feet per Cubic Yard
Bags vs. Bulk Delivery
Bagged Mulch
- Size: Usually 2 cu. ft. per bag
- Convenience: Easy to carry to backyards
- Cost: More expensive per yard
- Math: 13.5 bags = 1 Cubic Yard
Bulk Mulch
- Size: Sold by the scoop (cubic yard)
- Convenience: Delivered to driveway
- Cost: Much cheaper for large projects
- Math: Best for areas > 500 sq ft
