Tank Volume Calculator Guide
Understanding Tank Volume
Calculating the capacity of a tank depends on its shape. While most tanks are cylinders (like water heaters or propane tanks), some are rectangular or oval. The result is usually needed in gallons or liters.
The Circle Formula
Volume = π × Radius² × Length
Gallons = Cubic Feet × 7.48
Remember: The radius is half of the diameter. If you measure the width of the tank, divide by 2 first!
Vertical vs. Horizontal
Vertical Tank
Standing upright (like a silo or water heater).
- Fill Level: Linear relationship. If it's half full height-wise, it's half full volume-wise.
- Easy Math: Height directly correlates to volume.
Horizontal Tank
Lying on its side (like a propane or oil tank).
- Fill Level: Complex! Half height is half volume, but 1/4 height is LESS than 1/4 volume due to the curve.
- Dipstick: Requires a special chart to read correctly.
