Tile Calculator Guide
Understanding Tile Calculations
Tiling is a finishing trade where precision is paramount. Calculating the number of tiles isn't just about area; it's about the layout. How the tiles fit into your specific room dimensions determines how many cuts you'll make and how much waste you'll generate.
The Area Formula
The basic calculation is straightforward:
Total Area = Room Length × Room Width
Tiles Needed = Total Area / Area of Single Tile
However, this theoretical number is rarely the exact number you need to buy. You can't buy half a tile, and you will inevitably break some during cutting or installation.
Layout Patterns Affect Waste
Straight / Grid
The simplest pattern. Tiles are aligned in straight rows and columns.
- Waste Factor: ~5-10%
- Difficulty: Low
Diagonal / Diamond
Tiles are set at a 45-degree angle to the walls. Looks dynamic and hides non-square walls.
- Waste Factor: ~15-20%
- Difficulty: High (lots of cutting!)
